Komdigi Officially Opens Access to Reddit in Indonesia, Still Required to Register PSE

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Communication and Digital has normalized access to Reddit (reddit.com) after going through a process of hearing and searching for compliance with applicable regulatory provisions in Indonesia.

Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the Ministry of Komdigi, Alexander Sabar, said that this step was taken after the government ensured that Reddit had met a number of requirements, including restricting content that is prohibited in Indonesia.

"Based on the results of the investigation, Reddit has implemented geoblocking for the Indonesian region as well as restricting access and/or deleting illegal content such as gambling, pornography, and other content that violates Indonesian laws and regulations," Alex said in an official statement on Friday, July 3.

Previously, access to Reddit was restricted in Indonesia because the platform was considered to contain a lot of content that violated regulations in Indonesia, and had not registered as a Private Scope Electronic System Operator (PSE).

Although access has now been normalized, Komdigi emphasized that Reddit still has an obligation to register its entity as a Private Scope PSE.

In addition, the platform must also continue to comply with all applicable regulations in Indonesia, including those related to handling illegal content.

"If in the future illegal content can be accessed in Indonesia, Komdigi will take steps to handle it in accordance with applicable regulations," said Alex.
