Peru Declares State of Emergency in 22 Regions due to Heavy Rain Threat Associated with El Nino

Peru's authorities announced a 60-day state of emergency in almost 800 districts in 22 regions and the Callao Constitutional Province due to the imminent risk of heavy rains associated with the El Nino phenomenon, according to a report by the RPP television station on Thursday.

This step was established after a decree signed by President Jose Maria Balcazar who will soon end his term and was published on Thursday in the official El Peruano sheet.

According to the decree, estimates indicate that the El Nino phenomenon could continue until summer 2027, with rainfall expected to range from moderate to heavy intensity.

The declaration of a state of emergency covers 796 districts in 22 regions, including Lima, Piura, La Libertad, and Loreto, as well as the Callao Constitutional Province, Anadolu (3/7) reported.

Regional and local authorities will implement emergency measures and risk mitigation under the coordination and supervision of the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci), according to the decree.

The steps will also involve government ministries, while ongoing risk reduction, emergency response, and rehabilitation efforts will continue.
