Exploring the Charm of Morotai, a Marine Paradise with Stunning Nature and Preserved History
Morotai Island in North Maluku is increasingly attracting attention as a marine tourism destination that offers more than just a beach panorama.
In addition to having white sand and clear seas, this island also has a wealth of World War II history and a variety of natural activities suitable for tourists who want to enjoy a trip with a calmer atmosphere.
One of the areas that is the gateway to enjoying the beauty of Morotai is Daloha Beach. This beach has a long coastline with soft white sand and the sea water is so clear that the shallow waters can still be seen clearly.
In the morning, the atmosphere of the beach is calm. Some tourists choose to walk along the beach, while others enjoy the sea view or play sand with their families. Towards the afternoon and evening, the atmosphere changes to a more romantic one when the sky begins to be filled with stars with the accompaniment of waves.
According to the President Director of PT Jababeka Morotai and manager of the Morotai Special Economic Zone (KEK), Alan Wijaya, the area is indeed suitable for tourists who want to take a break from their routine.
"Our location here is suitable for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle for a while and enjoy a quiet atmosphere in the midst of natural beauty (Morotai)," Alan Wijaya said in a statement to VOI, Thursday, July 2.
Not only offering a panoramic view of the beach, Morotai is also known as one of the favorite destinations for marine tourism lovers. From the Daloha Beach area, tourists can swim, snorkel, and dive at a number of points that have different characters.
One of the popular locations is Dodola Island. This island is known for the phenomenon of quicksand that connects Dodola Besar and Dodola Kecil when the sea water recedes. The white sand expanse that appears in the middle of the sea is a unique attraction for tourists.
Meanwhile, for divers, Morotai offers the experience of exploring coral reefs as well as historical relics under the sea. On Mitita Island, tourists can meet black-finned sharks, while in the waters around Wawama Island there are still the remains of a Willys Jeep from World War II, which is now part of the marine ecosystem.
"If you come to Morotai but don't try diving, it's a shame," said Alan.
Apart from marine tourism, Morotai also has a number of interesting land destinations to explore. Tourists can trek to Raja Waterfall which has seven natural levels, observe various endemic birds, to visit Zum-zum Island which has historical value because it was once the residence of General Douglas MacArthur during World War II.
Traces of history can also be found at the Museum of the Second World War in Joubela Village. The museum, which was built independently by Muhlis Eso, stores thousands of war relics, ranging from military equipment, bullets, badges, to various artifacts found around Morotai.
According to Alan, many tourists initially came because they were interested in the beauty of the beach. However, after spending time on Morotai, they actually found another side of the island that was no less interesting.
"Many people come to Morotai because of its beaches and seas. But after being here, they usually only realize that Morotai also has a very strong historical story," he said.
He added that the experience of traveling to Morotai is not only about enjoying the natural panorama, but also getting to know the culture and history attached to the island.
"As a resort, we don't just sell a place to stay. We represent a destination. Therefore, we offer activity packages that combine cultural, historical, and natural experiences," said Alan Wijaya.
The combination of natural beaches, underwater wealth, and historical traces makes Morotai offer a different travel experience.
In one visit, tourists can enjoy the calm beach atmosphere, explore small islands, dive in tropical waters, and get to know important stories that have ever happened in the Pacific region.
This combination is what makes Morotai one of the destinations that are worth considering for lovers of nature and history tourism.
