Three People Died from Suffocation During Mexico's Victory over Ecuador at the 2026 World Cup

JAKARTA - Three people died of suffocation in Mexico City during the celebration of El Tri's victory over Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup 32-team round, Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

The tragedy occurred near Paseo de la Reforma, the main street in Mexico City, where thousands of fans gathered to celebrate Mexico's success in reaching the last 16 after winning 2-0 against Ecuador at the Azteca Stadium.

Local health officials confirmed the deaths of a 44-year-old man and two women, aged 19 and 48, from suffocation.

"As reported by local health services, the Mexico City emergency team immediately responded to reports of three unconscious people in different locations near Paseo de la Reforma."

"All medical response protocols were activated. However, unfortunately, they died. With a heavy heart, I convey my warmest greetings and deepest condolences to their families."

"We once again call for always celebrating with full responsibility, concern, and empathy," wrote Clara Brugada Molina, Head of the Government of Mexico City, on X.

The victory over Ecuador made history for Mexico. The reason is, they have never won a knockout match since beating Bulgaria in the 16th round when they hosted the tournament in 1986.
