Leani Ratri Wins 5 Gold at the Para-Bulu Tangkis World Championships
JAKARTA - Badminton player Leani Ratri Oktila managed to secure five gold medals from two events of the 2026 Para-Badminton World Championships in Europe last month. That number is almost half of the total gold medals won by the Indonesian team.
Ratri and a dozen Indonesian athletes will participate in two top-class events in June 2026, namely the French Para Badminton International 2026 in Mulhouse, France, on June 16-21 and the British & Irish Para Badminton International in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, on June 24-28.
"Praise God, the results in the two events yesterday were as desired," Ratri said in an official statement received by the media from the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NCP Indonesia) Public Relations.
Ratri and friends in total brought home 11 gold medals, four silver medals, and seven bronze medals from both events. When they went down in France, Indonesian representatives successfully secured five gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals.
Then when they landed in the Republic of Ireland, the Red-White badminton team increased their achievements by successfully winning six gold medals, one silver medal, and four bronze medals. This result made Ratri and colleagues out as the overall champions.
Ratri consistently became the champion of the women's singles SL4 classification and the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 classification with Hikmat Ramdani. Meanwhile, another gold medal he won when paired with Khalimatus Sadiyah in the women's doubles SL3-SU5.
Subhan, who competed in the SH6 men's doubles with Dimas Tri Aji and the SH6 mixed doubles with Rina Marlina, also showed an equally impressive performance. Opponents from other countries could not be beaten so that Subhan, Dhimas and Rina always came out as champions in a series of championships in Europe.
The men's doubles number in the SL3-SU5 classification also consistently belongs to the Indonesian representatives. Fredy Setiawan who pairs with Hikmat Ramdani performed consistently to secure gold medals in France and Ireland.
The dominance of Indonesian representatives in both events is a perfect projection for preparation for the Asian Para-Games which will take place this year.
The coordinator of the Indonesian para-badminton coach, Jarot Hernowo, said that the achievement was very important because the ticket to compete in the Asian Para-Games will be determined from the world ranking of athletes.
"In certain numbers, the participants are mostly from the top five in Asia. They are the ones who will later participate in the 2026 Asian Para-Games."
"If you look at the standings, our top athletes have already taken positions that will hopefully qualify," he said.
The scent of competition at the 2026 Asian Para-Games has actually been smelled from the championships in France and Ireland. The women's doubles number in the SL3-SU5 classification is one of the most promising for tight competition.
His opponent came from India, represented by Manasi Girishchandra Joshi/Thulasimanthi Murugesan. The pair successfully defeated Ratri/Khalimatus in the final match in France with a score of 19-21, 21-15, and 21-11.
Ratri/Khalimatus then avenged their defeat in the final match in Ireland with a score of 21-14, 13-21, and 21-17.
"The competition among athletes from Asia is very tight because in the numbers that are the main contenders, most of the Asian athletes are our main competitors. There are only one or two numbers that competitors come from other continents," said Jarot.
The 2026 Asian Para-Games are scheduled to take place from October 18-24, 2026. Before competing there, Indonesian para-badminton athletes will still participate in events in China in August 2026.
