The Mystery of the Death of a Unima Student Begins to Unfold, DS Lecturer is a Suspect of Sexual Violence

MANADO - After 6 months investigating the case of the death of a student of the State University of Manado (Unima), Anthoniela Evia Maria Mangolo (AEM), the Directorate of Investigation of the North Sulawesi Police PPA and PPO has finally named a lecturer at Unima with the initials DS as a suspect.

The determination was made in the case of alleged sexual violence against the victim. Previously, AEM was found dead in his dormitory room at the end of December 2025.

Director of the PPA-PPO Division of the North Sulawesi Police, Kombes Pol Nonie Sengkey, said investigators had held a case after obtaining information from forensic psychologists.

"The development of the Unima case, some time ago we have carried out the determination of the suspect. After we have collected expert information from Apsifor (forensic psychology association)," said Nonie in his statement, Wednesday, July 1.

He explained that the results of the title of the case became the basis for investigators to raise the legal status of DS to a suspect.

"Then we carried out the determination of the suspect and have named DS as a suspect in the case of alleged sexual violence experienced by the Unima victim. As we know, DS is a lecturer from Unima," he said.

Although he has been named a suspect, DS has not been detained. According to Nonie, the decision was made because the health condition of the person concerned still requires medical treatment.

"No detention was carried out because the person concerned was yesterday in a sick condition, needed treatment, had an operation. We have also brought it to the Bhayangkara Hospital and there is a certificate. Later we will think about it again," he said.

Meanwhile, the victim's family lawyer, Zhem Wengen, appreciated the steps of the North Sulawesi Police investigators, who he considered responsive in handling the case.

"On behalf of the family, as the legal representative of the victim's sister EM, I would like to thank the North Sulawesi Police, in this case the Directorate of PPA and PPO. Mrs. Dir and Mr. Paulus and all the investigators at the PPA who always open a good communication space with us, the lawyers and the family," said Zhem.

He also expressed his appreciation to the media who continued to follow the development of the case since it first surfaced to the public.

"Not only that, (we) also thank all media friends who faithfully followed up the case of the death of Evia Mangolo's sister," he said.

The case of the death of a Unima student in the city of Tomohon had caught the attention of the people of North Sulawesi at the end of 2025. When he was first found, the victim was hanging in his dormitory room.

However, the direction of the investigation changed after the police found a will at the scene. The contents of the letter raised suspicions of other issues behind the victim's death, prompting the family to request a more in-depth investigation.

The victim's parents then urged an autopsy to be carried out to scientifically reveal the cause of death. The official report to the police was submitted on Wednesday (31/12/2025), a day after the body was found, to determine whether or not there was involvement of other parties.

As the investigation progresses, the North Sulawesi Police finally revealed the alleged sexual violence that EM allegedly experienced before dying. The designation of DS as a suspect became a new chapter in the disclosure of the case.
