BPS Projects Rice Production to Reach 25.28 Million Tons by August 2026 amid Price Increase
JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) estimates that national rice production from January to August 2026 reached 25.28 million tons or increased slightly by 0.01 million tons or 0.05 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
BPS Distribution and Services Statistics Deputy Ateng Hartono explained that the increase in rice production was in line with the increasing projection of rice production during the first eight months of this year.
"Rice production from January to August 2026 is estimated to reach 25.28 million tons or an increase of 0.01 million tons or an increase of 0.05 percent compared to the same period in 2025," he said in a press conference, Wednesday, July 1.
According to BPS, rice production in the period June to August 2026 is estimated to reach 8.42 million tons or grow 1.17 percent compared to the same period last year.
However, in May 2026, the production of rice for public food consumption was recorded at 2.84 million tons, down 3.43 percent compared to May 2025 which reached 2.94 million tons.
A similar decline also occurred in rice production where BPS estimated that rice production in May 2026 reached 4.92 million tons of milled dry paddy (GKG), 3.43 percent lower than the same period last year which was 5.09 million tons of GKG.
However, the potential production of rice in the period June to August 2026 is estimated to reach 14.61 million tons of GKG or an increase of 11.18 percent compared to the same period last year.
Cumulatively, rice production from January to August 2026 is estimated to reach 43.89 million tons of GKG, up around 0.06 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
In terms of harvest area, BPS recorded the rice harvest area in May 2026 reached 0.98 million hectares or down 2.35 percent year-on-year.
However, the harvest area in the period from June to August is estimated to increase to 2.88 million hectares, or an increase of 1.38 percent compared to the previous year.
Overall, the area of rice harvest from January to August 2026 is projected to reach 8.35 million hectares, an increase of 0.04 million hectares or 0.43 percent compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, BPS also recorded an increase in rice prices at various levels of trade in June 2026, namely at the milling level, the price of premium rice increased by 1.01 percent on a monthly basis (month-to-month) and jumped 11.66 percent on an annual basis (year-on-year).
Meanwhile, the price of medium rice increased by 0.92 percent compared to the previous month and increased by 5.10 percent compared to June 2025.
On average, the price of rice at the milling level was recorded to have increased by 0.97 percent on a monthly basis and increased by 6.96 percent on an annual basis.
The price increase also occurred at the wholesale and retail levels. BPS recorded rice price inflation at the wholesale level of 0.82 percent on a monthly basis and 5.12 percent on an annual basis.
Meanwhile, at the retail level, the price of rice experienced inflation of 3.98 percent compared to the same period last year.
Ateng emphasized that the rice price data is a national average that includes various rice qualities and all regions in Indonesia.
