Venezuelan Opposition Leader Maria Corina Arrives Back in Her Country
JAKARTA - Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado is still trying to return to her country as soon as possible despite her return attempt last week being canceled.
Citing several US officials, Bloomberg reported that Machado was planning to return to Venezuela last week via Curacao Island, but canceled the trip after the administration of US President Donald Trump signaled that it did not support his return at that time.
According to the report, the Trump administration conveyed its position to Dutch authorities, the Venezuelan government, and Machado's team.
Bloomberg also reported that Machado hired a private security contractor to facilitate his return to Venezuela while providing protection while in the country.
The security team has been stationed in Curacao while waiting for his arrival.
According to the report, which was reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, July 1, Machado does not have a valid passport so he cannot enter Venezuela legally without permission from the government of Interim President Delcy Rodriguez.
Washington is said to be concerned that Machado's return could spark a confrontation with the ruling government and distract from post-earthquake rescue efforts that took place on Wednesday.
However, Bloomberg reported that Machado also had the support of at least one senior Trump administration official.
Machado is still interested in making a short visit to Venezuela, although it is not clear whether the plan is still possible after his return attempt last week was canceled.
