Deschamps Praises Mbappe after Emotional Tribute at 2026 World Cup
JAKARTA - France coach Didier Deschamps revealed on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, that he was deeply touched by Kylian Mbappe's hug after the team captain dedicated his opening goal to him during the 3-0 victory over Sweden in the 2026 World Cup 32-final.
Deschamps returned to the sidelines after leaving the French camp and missing the last game of the group stage following the death of his mother.
"Kylian's attitude really touched me. He is our captain. I don't just say good things just like that, but because he has been an example since day one," said Deschamps.
Deschamps praised his squad's unity and focus during a personally difficult week. France have won all four of their 2026 World Cup matches so far, scoring at least three goals in each victory.
"The squad is united. They did what was needed when I was away. It's better that I'm not there, both for them and for me."
"However, once I came back, they knew I was with them. That was a very good thing. The team mentality does not win the game alone, but I know very well that it can make you lose," said Deschamps.
In addition to praising the top scorer at the 2026 World Cup - Mbappe is in the same position as Lionel Messi with six goals - Deschamps also highlighted Bayern Munich striker Michael Olise, who provided two assists against Sweden to bring his total assists to five.
"When he has the ball, it's amazing. He plays world-class football. He's had a very good season and needs a little time."
"However, he has an incredible influence on the squad. He complements the other strikers well. Their understanding on the pitch becomes automatic," said Deschamps.
After the elimination of strong teams such as Germany and the Netherlands in the early rounds, France easily defeated Sweden and will now face Paraguay in the 16th round on July 4, 2026 in Philadelphia.
"We've seen other knockout games. It's difficult for everyone. For us, it's easier because we executed our game plan very well, but we've just reached the last 16."
"We know what awaits us in the next four days. We have to repeat this performance against an opponent with different qualities."
"France has very talented players. When they play with that mindset and focus, it's very good," said the Les Bleus coach.
