Janice Tjen Makes a Surprise at Wimbledon, Knocks Out Leylah Fernandez

JAKARTA - Indonesian women's tennis player Janice Tjen managed to make a big surprise when she made her debut at Wimbledon 2026. She eliminated the 22nd-seeded Canadian, Leylah Fernandez, in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament.

Janice defeated Fernandez in two straight sets 6-1 and 7-6(3) on Monday, June 29, 2026, WIB night. The 24-year-old finished the match in one hour and 29 minutes.

From the start of the match, Janice immediately appeared aggressive. He broke Fernandez's serve in the opening game and again seized his opponent's two service games to open a 5-1 lead.

The Jakarta-born tennis player did not lose momentum in the first set. Janice again created a break in the seventh game to close the opening set with a landslide victory 6-1.

In the second set, Fernandez started to give a stronger resistance. Both players were able to maintain the service until the score was tied 6-6 and the match had to be decided through a tie-break.

In the decisive phase, Janice appeared calmer. He was able to control the game and secure the tie-break victory with a score of 7-3 to secure a ticket to the second round of Wimbledon.

Statistically, Janice showed a solid performance throughout the match. He recorded six aces without making a double fault, producing 24 winners, and only made 10 own mistakes.

Meanwhile, Fernandez recorded five aces, three double faults, 20 winners, and 22 unforced errors. Janice was also more effective in utilizing break point opportunities by converting three of the nine opportunities obtained.

The victory over Fernandez was an important result for Janice considering that her opponent was a finalist at the 2021 US Open and one of the favorites at Wimbledon 2026. The result was a positive capital for Janice on her debut in the world's most prestigious tennis tournament.

In the second round, Janice will face Daria Kasatkina. The Australian tennis player qualified for the second round after defeating the host Mimi Xu in a three-set match.

In addition to appearing in the singles, Janice will also compete in the women's doubles sector with Aldila Sutjiadi. The Indonesian pair are scheduled to face the British doubles, Harriet Dart/Maia Lumsden, in the first round which takes place on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
