Trump's Special Envoy and Son-in-law to Attend Iran-US High-Level Meeting in Doha Today

JAKARTA - The United States said a high-level meeting on Iran would be held in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday, with President Donald Trump's chief envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

In a social media post on Monday, Trump said Iran had requested the meeting and it would take place in the Qatari capital without giving any details.

Moments later, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that Witkoff and Kushner would attend the talks.

"Witkoff and Jared Kushner's special envoys will fly to Doha for a high-level meeting this week, as we continue to discuss the memorandum of understanding. In the sidelines of these high-level talks, there will be technical talks," he said, launching Al Arabiya (29/6).

"As far as we know, we have fulfilled our part of the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence," Leavitt added.

Separately, Iran's Foreign Ministry earlier on Monday denied reports that Iranian and American technical teams would meet this week to discuss implementing an agreement to end the Middle East war.

The US and Iran signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the four-month conflict on June 17, in which both sides agreed to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas.

However, weekend counterattacks threatened to derail the fragile deal.

The return of talks comes after days of attacks and counterattacks since Iranian projectiles hit a cargo ship in the strait on Thursday, with the US and Iran accusing each other of violating a temporary ceasefire.

"There was an attack on commercial vessels that was responded to by the United States, at the direction of the president, and it will continue to happen, but we hope it won't happen again. The president clearly wants to see the peace process go well," Leavitt said on the "Fox & Friends" program.
