Often Beser after Drinking Coffee? Doctors Explain the Causes and Ways to Reduce the Effects

JAKARTA - For many people, a cup of coffee is a loyal friend to start the day or chase away drowsiness. However, not a few people complain of urinating more frequently after consuming it.

So, is coffee really making someone thirsty and at risk of dehydration? The doctor explained, coffee can indeed affect the frequency of urination because it contains caffeine.

This compound has a diuretic property, which stimulates the body to produce more urine. Not only coffee, caffeine content is also found in various other drinks and foods, such as green tea (green tea), matcha, chocolate, and a number of processed products made from cocoa.

"Coffee in general contains caffeine. But not only coffee, green tea, matcha tea, and chocolate also contain caffeine. The content of this caffeine is diuretic, so it makes a person produce more urine. If consumed in large quantities, urine production will increase so that a person becomes more frequent urination,"

"This is what Dr. Fina Widia, Sp. U., Subsp. F.F.N (K), - Specialist Doctor in Urology Subspecialist Functional and Neurology Consultant said at the launch of the Siloam Hospital Asri Pelvic & Bladder Comprehensive Clinic in Jakarta, Monday, June 29.

In addition to increasing urine production, caffeine can also irritate the bladder in some people. As a result, the bladder feels fuller faster so that the desire to urinate arises even though the volume is not maximal.

"Coffee can also irritate the bladder. Because urine production increases, the bladder becomes more sensitive so that it feels more quickly to urinate," he said.

However, this does not mean that coffee lovers have to stop consuming it. According to doctors, the most important thing is to find the amount of consumption that is appropriate for each person's body condition.

"This complaint is generally related to excessive coffee consumption. Therefore, patients are advised to find a balance, because the risk cannot be completely avoided," he said.

As an alternative, some people choose decaffeinated coffee or low-caffeine coffee. This choice can indeed help reduce the diuretic and bladder irritation effects. However, there are consequences.

"Decaffeinated can indeed have an effect, but the effect of preventing drowsiness is certainly not as effective as caffeinated coffee," explained dr. Fina.

Many people are concerned that frequent urination after drinking coffee will cause dehydration. In fact, in people with healthy kidney conditions, the body has a natural mechanism to maintain fluid balance.

"Our body is created in such a way that it can regulate the balance of body fluids. In healthy conditions, the body is very sophisticated. If there is excess fluid and the kidney function is good, the body will remove the excess. Conversely, when there is a lack of fluid, the kidneys will maintain the fluid in the body as optimally as possible," he explained.

This means that the consumption of coffee in reasonable amounts generally will not immediately cause dehydration in healthy people. What needs to be considered is to keep the daily fluid intake sufficient, especially if you consume several cups of coffee a day.

Tips Drinking Coffee so as not to irritate the bladder

For coffee lovers who often experience a hangover, there are several ways that can be done to reduce complaints, including:

Limit coffee consumption so as not to be excessive and adjust to your body's tolerance. Balance every cup of coffee by drinking enough water. Avoid drinking coffee in close proximity to other caffeinated beverages, such as tea or energy drinks. If the bladder is sensitive, consider choosing decaffeinated coffee. If complaints often urinate accompanied by pain, dizziness, or blood appears in the urine, immediately consult a doctor to ensure there is no disorder in the urinary tract.

"Enjoying coffee is still safe for most people as long as it is consumed wisely. Knowing the limits of the body's tolerance is the key to ensuring that the benefits of coffee can still be felt without disturbing the health of the urinary tract," he concluded.
