Massive Earthquake Disables Internet, Starlink Freezes Service in Venezuela
JAKARTA - Starlink provides free satellite internet service until July 25 for customers in the area of Venezuela affected by a major earthquake. The service was provided after the electricity and telecommunications networks in the country were damaged.
According to a report by Anadolu Agency quoted on Friday, June 26, Starlink announced the policy on Thursday, a day after two strong earthquakes shook Venezuela.
Active Starlink customers in the affected areas will automatically receive credit in their accounts. Customers who have previously canceled the service also receive credit so that they can reactivate the connection.
Starlink is also opening up access for new customers in affected areas. Those who purchase satellite devices can contact customer service after activation to get free service until July 25.
The company said customers whose Starlink devices were damaged by the earthquake could request a replacement device for free.
The policy was announced after internet connections in Venezuela dropped sharply on Wednesday. Internet monitoring group NetBlocks said two strong earthquakes damaged electricity and telecommunications infrastructure.
In a post on the X platform, NetBlocks said network data showed internet connections dropped sharply after magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes disrupted parts of Venezuela's communications infrastructure.
The quake caused widespread damage in northern Venezuela. Emergency response operations are underway as authorities still calculate the level of damage.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez earlier declared a national state of emergency after officials reported major damage to infrastructure.
