Spotify Reveals 60 Percent of Indonesian Musicians' Royalties Come from Abroad
JAKARTA - The Indonesian music industry is increasingly showing its fangs on the international stage. Music player platform Spotify notes that the majority of the income generated by Indonesian musicians actually comes from listeners who are abroad.
The record signifies that geographical barriers are no longer an obstacle for local works to compete globally.
Spotify Southeast Asia Managing Director, Gustav Back, revealed that the development of digital economy in the music streaming industry today has reached a very fantastic value, almost 17 billion US dollars, worldwide.
In this massive growth, Indonesian musicians have managed to take an important role and continue to expand their market share abroad.
"And 60 percent of all royalties generated by Indonesian artists on Spotify come from listeners outside Indonesia. That tells us something important: geography is no longer a barrier to success," Back told the media in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, Thursday, June 25.
According to Back, currently local musicians have a great ability to reach a listener base that goes far beyond the domestic market. He cited an example of an indie music group from Jakarta, Reality Club, which has now managed to build a very strong fan base in various parts of the world, such as in the United States, Chile, Mexico, and the Philippines.
This positive achievement is inseparable from the total growth of royalties received by local creators. Spotify recorded the royalty revenue generated by Indonesian musicians grew by more than 16 percent in the past year alone. In fact, if accumulated in the past three years, the amount of royalties has increased more than doubled.
Spotify is also committed to continuing to show how the global music industry's path has expanded. Success is no longer dominated only by the world's top artists, but also by thousands of independent musicians who build real careers through their respective genres and regional languages - something that was unimaginable a generation ago.
Looking ahead, Spotify expressed its commitment to continue investing in team development, cutting-edge technology playback, and improving the user experience.
This strategic step is taken to create greater opportunities for new Indonesian musicians so that they can be discovered by a new fan base and build a sustainable career in the global music industry.
