IBL 2026 Final: Controversy over Officiating Reaches a New High Ahead of Game 4 Pelita Jaya vs Bogor Hornbills

JAKARTA - The 2026 IBL final between Pelita Jaya Basketball and Bogor Hornbills not only presents fierce competition on the field, but also re-raises the debate about the quality of referee leadership.

Entering the fourth game which will take place at GOR Laga Tangkas, Pakansari, Bogor, Friday, June 26, 2026, Pelita Jaya is temporarily ahead 2-1 in the best-of-five format of the 2026 IBL final.

From the playoffs to the final match, a number of referee decisions have been the subject of discussion among Indonesian basketball fans. This condition raises questions about the effectiveness of the use of foreign referees, which have been hoped to improve the quality of officiating and minimize controversies in important matches.

In the first two matches of the 2026 IBL final, Pelita Jaya lost its foreign player, Darious Moten, due to a foul-out. Meanwhile, in the third game, the star and MVP of the 2026 IBL for the Bogor Hornbills, Travin Thibodeaux, also had to leave the match earlier after being declared a foul-out, including through two offensive fouls.

In the final, IBL implemented a match leadership system consisting of two foreign referees recommended by FIBA and one local referee. The third game was led by Japanese referee Urushima, Saudi Arabia referee Alhejaili, and Indonesian referee Budi Marfan.

However, a number of decisions in the match still drew attention. One of the most discussed moments was the technical foul given to the Bogor Hornbills coach which triggered a reaction from the supporters of both teams.

Another controversy arose when Travin Thibodeaux made a hook move against Pelita Jaya player Jeff Withey. Initially, the incident was only judged as a personal foul.

The presence of foreign referees is expected not only to be a symbol of the internationalization of the competition, but also to be able to improve the quality of decision-making on the field. Danny, a Pelita Jaya supporter who has watched all the 2026 IBL finals so far, believes referee controversies are too often the main topic after the game.

"As a supporter of Pelita Jaya, of course I want my team to win. However, more than that, I want the match to be determined by the quality of the players' and coach's game."

"Unfortunately, after almost every game that is hotly debated, it is the referee's decision. This big final should be remembered for the basketball, not because of the controversy," he said.

A similar view was expressed by Tedi, a supporter of the Bogor Hornbills who was also present in the three final matches.

"I support the Hornbills, but I also want the match to be fair and consistent for both teams."

"In my opinion, there are still some decisions that confuse the audience. Foreign referees are expected to improve the quality of the match so that whoever wins will really win because of the game on the field," he said.

The comments from the two supporters from different camps show that the officiating issue is not only related to the outcome of the match, but also concerns the credibility of the competition as a whole.

With the final series still underway, the biggest hope of all parties is that the determination of the 2026 IBL champion will be determined by the quality of the athletes' game and the coaches' strategies.
