KAI Records 134 Accidents at Sebidang Crossing, 88 Percent Impacted by Drivers Breaking Through

JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI recorded as many as 134 accidents occurred at a single track crossing until June 22, 2026. The majority of the incidents were triggered by the reckless violation of road users who dared to cross the crossing when the train would pass.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that out of a total of 134 accidents, as many as 118 incidents or about 88 percent were caused by crossing the crossing. Meanwhile, seven incidents were caused by vehicle breakdowns and six incidents occurred due to the gate being late or not closed.

According to Anne, the high number of accidents shows the importance of road user discipline when crossing a piece of land.

"Open bridges still need to be responded to with vigilance, don't just drive. Closed bridges are orders to stop. Every rider must stop for a moment, look right and left, listen around, then make sure the path is really safe. When the bridge starts to close, the siren sounds, or the officer gives a stop signal, don't look for a gap," he said in an official statement, Thursday, June 25.

Based on KAI data, in the same period, accidents at a single crossing had caused 113 victims. The details, 48 people died, 29 people were seriously injured, and 36 people were lightly injured.

"In terms of vehicles, there are 134 affected vehicles. It consists of 77 units or 57 percent are motorcycles, and 57 units or 43 percent are cars," said Anne.

KAI data also shows that accidents do not only occur at crossings without guards. A total of 62 incidents or 46 percent occurred at gated crossings, while 72 incidents or 54 percent occurred at crossings without doors.

"Therefore, the barrier must be understood as a safety aid, while the decision to stop, look, and wait safely remains with road users," he said.

However, KAI noted an improvement compared to the same period last year. The number of accidents at a single crossing fell from 138 incidents to 134 incidents or decreased by 3 percent.

Anne said the number of affected vehicles also decreased from 144 units to 134 units or decreased by 7 percent. Meanwhile, the number of victims decreased by 25 percent from 151 people in the same period last year to 113 people.

However, Anne assessed that the number of fatalities, which still reached 48 people, must be a concern for all parties.

"The declining numbers show that safety efforts are working, but one life is too precious to risk because of haste. It's better to lose a minute or two at the crossing than to lose the future of a family," he said.

To reduce the number of accidents, KAI continues to take various steps, including closing and narrowing the crossing of a piece together with stakeholders. As of June 22, 2026, the realization of the program has reached 226 treatments or 128 percent of the target of 177 points.

In addition, from January to May 2026, KAI has carried out 1,036 safety socialization activities, 167 education activities at schools, places of worship, and the community, and installed 308 safety reminder media.

Anne also reminded the public not to carry out activities on the railway line because the area is an operational area that must be sterile.

"The habit of breaking through must be abandoned. The culture of safety starts with a simple decision, namely stopping, looking right, looking left, listening around, then crossing after it is safe," concluded Anne.
