Priority Sports Branches of DBON Must Be Competed in PON XXII 2028
JAKARTA - Priority sports branches included in the National Sports Master Plan (DBON) must be competed in the XXII National Sports Week (PON) 2028.
The Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), Erick Thohir, said that the necessity to include priority sports branches (cabor) in the largest national four-year sports festival was part of the re-mapping of Indonesia's sports achievements towards various events at the international level.
"Please ensure that the branches of Indonesian flagship sports that are in accordance with the latest DBON for 21 mandatory sports are competed," said Erick in a press conference in accordance with holding a consolidation meeting with the three governors of the PON 2028 organizers in Jakarta, Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The priority sports that entered the DBON were athletics, gymnastics, aquatics, badminton, weightlifting, rock climbing, archery, football, shooting, judo, boxing, taekwondo, cycling, beach volleyball (2 x 2), and basketball (3 x 3).
In addition, there are rowing (rowing and canoe), tennis, fencing, wrestling, equestrian, and pencak silat which are sports belonging to the Indonesian nation.
Erick said that there were still further meetings to be held with the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) so that they could determine the sports branches to be competed in the 2028 PON because the list that currently exists can still change.
"We also hope that later in the meeting, the KONI party can also enforce good rules for the transfer of athletes, the sports that are contested, all must have good benchmarks," he said.
PON XXII 2028 will take place in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) as well as DKI Jakarta as a buffer province.
The largest multi-branch sports festival in Indonesia should only take place in NTT and NTB. However, Jakarta then joined as an organizer because of budget efficiency policies that did not allow the construction of new venues.
