'Special' Isolation Facility for US Citizens Infected with Ebola in Congo Built in Kenya Halted
JAKARTA - The Kenyan government through its Minister of Health (Menkes) Aden Duale is secretly running a special quarantine facility project for US citizens (WN) who were evacuated from the Democratic Republic of Congo because they were suspected of being infected with the Ebola virus.
Citing AFP, the project was finally stopped by the Kenyan government on Tuesday, June 23, along with the conviction of the Kenyan Minister of Health by the court for ignoring the order to stop the construction of the facility based on a previous ruling from the high court.
Construction of the facility has been underway at Laikipia Air Base, about 200 kilometers from Kenya's capital, Nairobi. The project is planned to include 50 isolation beds and will be managed by US medical staff.
Kenyans are strongly opposed to the project for a special isolation facility for US citizens with Ebola patients in their country, which their government announced in May 2026.
Not to mention the deadly disease that is currently raging in the Democratic Republic of Congo is very likely to spread quickly in Kenya if the facility is operational.
Human rights groups have also petitioned the court, saying the facility was developed secretly and without consultation by the Kenyan government.
On Monday, June 22, the Kenyan Court finally ruled that Health Minister Duale was guilty of failing to respond to a high court order to stop the quarantine facility project at Laikipia Air Base.
Minister of Health Duale represented the government who was present at the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, June 23, apologizing for his behavior.
"I have ordered the immediate and complete cessation of all construction, land preparation, or related activities planned regarding the Laikipia Air Base facility until the hearing and determination of the substantive petition or until further orders from this court," he said.
Cases of Ebola have so far not been recorded in Kenya. The people of the country in East Africa then opposed the entry of potential carriers of a highly contagious disease into Kenya.
In this project, the US promised USD13.5 million for the construction of a special quarantine facility for the treatment of US citizens who were suspected of having Ebola from the RD Congo.
Behind it, many critics in Kenya rejected and judged the intentions and actions of the US Government as colonial.
