Dutch Citizen Hydroponic Cannabis Grower in Bali Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison

DENPASAR - The Denpasar District Court panel of judges sentenced a Dutch citizen, Nirul Rashim Abdoelrazak, to three years in prison for being proven to have planted and controlled hydroponic marijuana in Denpasar, Bali.

The chairman of the panel of judges, Imam Lukmanul Hakim, stated in the trial that the defendant was found guilty of committing a crime without rights or against the law to plant, maintain, possess, store, control, or provide narcotic drugs of Group I in the form of plants.

The panel of judges stated that the defendant was proven to have violated Article 111 paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics as the second alternative indictment of the public prosecutor.

"To judge and sentence the defendant Nirul Rashim Abdoelrazak to three years in prison," said the judge when reading the verdict, reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 23.

In addition to imprisonment, the defendant was also sentenced to a fine of Rp510 million, which was 141 days in prison.

In its consideration, the panel of judges rejected the defendant's argument that the marijuana was used to support health recovery.

However, the defendant's health condition is one of the factors that mitigate so that the sentence imposed is lower than the public prosecutor's demand.

Previously, the prosecutor demanded the defendant a prison sentence of nine years.

Based on the verdict, Public Prosecutor I Made Lovi Pusnawan said he was still thinking, while the defendant and his legal advisor accepted the decision of the panel of judges.

Before leaving the courtroom, the defendant asked that his cellphone be returned because there were music scores stored in the device.

However, the panel of judges stated that based on the court's decision, the mobile phone was confiscated for the state.

The judge explained that the defendant could coordinate further with the public prosecutor regarding the evidence because its implementation was the authority of the prosecutor after the verdict was read.

In his demand letter, the prosecutor revealed that the defendant cultivated marijuana hydroponically at a house on Jalan Bina Kusuma IV, Banjar Merta Gangga, Ubung Kaja, North Denpasar.

The defendant and his wife, Kseniia Varlamuva, occupied the house and since around March 2025 began to prepare facilities to cultivate marijuana inside the house.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant planted marijuana seeds and took care of them until they grew and produced marijuana leaves and flowers which were then stored at the location.

The activity was known by his wife.

The case was revealed on October 1, 2025 when Bali Police officers arrested the defendant at the house and found a number of evidence related to the cultivation of marijuana type narcotics.
