The Country with the Fastest Internet in the World in 2026 Version of the Speedtest Global Index

YOGYAKARTA - The country with the fastest internet in the world in 2026 is now dominated by the Middle East and Europe. This fast connection speed is a serious proof of the seriousness of digital infrastructure investment in various parts of the world.

For those of you who are curious, this list is compiled based on the latest official data from the Speedtest Global Index. Interestingly, Indonesia's performance actually shows a trend that you should pay attention to this year.

List of Countries with the Fastest Mobile Internet in the World

Based on the Speedtest Global Index report from Ookla, the United Arab Emirates is still firmly at the top of the mobile internet category with download speeds of more than 600 Mbps. This position has lasted for quite some time thanks to the full dominance of 5G technology.

Qatar followed in second place with a very impressive speed. Brazil, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the United States also complete the list of countries with the world's fastest mobile connections.

It's only natural that residents in these countries rarely complain about slow connections. Online gaming, HD video calls, and uploading content to social media can be done without significant obstacles.

List of Countries with the Fastest Fixed Broadband in the World

Then for the home internet or fixed broadband category, Singapore emerged as the world champion with download speeds above 400 Mbps. This city state has long been known to be very aggressive in deploying fiber optic networks throughout its territory.

Then the United Arab Emirates again entered the top list, this time alongside France which recorded broadband speeds above 350 Mbps. The United States, Switzerland, Japan, and South Korea are also consistently in the world's elite ranks.

The pattern that emerges is quite clear. These countries generally have a dense population in urban areas and large funds to build an optical cable network to the residents' homes.

It is no wonder that these countries are also superior in other digital ecosystems, ranging from fintech to online public services. Internet speed is closely related to the overall progress of the digital economy.

How is Indonesia's position in the midst of this competition?

Unfortunately, Indonesia's performance is still far from satisfactory. Based on the Speedtest Global Index for the period of May 2026, Indonesia's mobile internet speed is only at 62.54 Mbps and ranks 74 out of 101 countries.

The condition is not better in the fixed broadband sector. Indonesia's average speed is recorded at 47.10 Mbps and is ranked 117 out of 149 countries, ironically our country is behind Cambodia and Laos.

In the Southeast Asian region alone, Indonesia is only ahead of Myanmar for the fixed broadband category. Meanwhile, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand have far outpaced with speeds of hundreds of Mbps.

Why is Indonesian Internet Still Considered Slow?

Indonesia's vast geographical area and archipelago form one of the main obstacles to infrastructure equalization. Installing fiber optic cables to remote areas requires large costs and faces challenges such as forests and mountains.

Another question is on the last mile, namely the final connection from the main network to the user's home. The spread of FTTH or fiber to the home is still uneven, so many areas have not been able to enjoy the fastest connection promised.

High international bandwidth prices also play a role. Most content and cloud services are still hosted overseas, making data have to travel long distances via undersea cables before reaching your device.

On the other hand, the Minister of Communication targets mobile broadband speeds to reach 80 Mbps by 2026, up from 63.51 Mbps in the previous year. The government's own long-term target is 100 Mbps, a work in progress.

The competition of countries with the fastest internet in the world in 2026 shows how important it is to invest in digital infrastructure for a nation. Monitor the latest technology and digital conditions from both home and abroad at VOI now and get reliable information every day.
