US-Qatar Review the Release of Assets of Rp106.9 Trillion Belonging to Iran
JAKARTA - The United States and Qatar are studying granting Iran access to a frozen set of $6 billion (around Rp106.9 trillion) for humanitarian needs.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the initiative is being considered as an incentive for Iran to sign a comprehensive agreement on the final settlement of the conflict with the US, according to the newspaper's report.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, June 20, according to the plan, assets currently frozen in Qatar will be unfrozen for transactions to purchase food, medicine, and other humanitarian commodities.
The mechanism could provide a framework for further concessions that would affect other assets belonging to Iran that are still frozen. However, Iran is reportedly still not agreeing to the proposal.
On Sunday (14/6), Iran and the United States stated that they had completed a peace memorandum of understanding. Then, on Thursday morning (18/7), the leaders of the two countries signed the agreement electronically and separately to end the war.
The peace memorandum signed gives the US and Iran 60 days to negotiate their final agreement on Iran's nuclear issue and US sanctions against Iran.
The deal also set a time for the US to end its naval blockade of Iran and for Iran to restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
