EU Wants to Build Diplomatic Communication with Russia

JAKARTA - The European Union wants to open diplomatic channels with Russia to exchange views, but does not claim to be a mediator in the Ukraine issue.

"What I do through my office is build diplomatic channels, because we cannot just rely on others to interpret Russian messages and we must be able to convey our own messages directly to Russia," said President of the European Council Antonio Costa as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, June 20.

The European Union must also immediately establish direct contact with Moscow. Costajuga said the rules in the European Union allow for the initiative to establish such contact.

At the same time, the EU does not want to play a mediator role in negotiations related to the conflict in Ukraine, Costa said.
