Prabowo Gives Special Attention to Disabled Athletes, Training Program Prepared
BOGOR - President Prabowo Subianto has given special attention to the development of disability sports. One of the programs prepared by the government is coaching certification for disabled athletes so that they have career opportunities after retiring from the competition arena.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir after reporting a number of national sports programs to the President at Hambalang, Bogor, Friday (19/6).
According to Erick, the President assessed that people with disabilities must have equal opportunities in the world of sports.
"The President is very concerned about disability sports," said Erick.
He explained that Indonesia has tens of millions of people with disabilities. Of this number, about 11 percent are recorded to be actively exercising.
Therefore, the government wants to ensure that disabled athletes receive stronger support, not only during competition but also afterwards.
One of the steps prepared is a coach certification program for disabled athletes.
"After becoming athletes, they can also become coaches," said Erick.
In addition, the President also plans to visit the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) Indonesia training center in Karanganyar which has not yet been inaugurated.
According to Erick, attention to disability sports is part of efforts to provide equal access and opportunities for all citizens.
"This is an important part that we must give all Indonesian citizens the same opportunity," he said.
The government hopes that strengthening the coaching and development of the career of disabled athletes can expand participation and improve Indonesia's achievements in international Paralympic sports events.
