Stewart Copeland and Sting's Relationship Remains Harmonious Amid The Police Copyright Lawsuit
JAKARTA - Former The Police drummer Stewart Copeland insists that his personal relationship with the vocalist, Sting, is still going very well.
The relationship remained intact even though they are currently involved in a legal dispute regarding royalty rights from The Police catalog in the British court.
Copeland said the $2 million legal conflict did not affect personal communication between them at all.
The lawsuit filed by Copeland along with guitarist Andy Summers was entirely left to their respective legal teams in London.
"We're not in court. The accountants are there, somewhere in London. For me personally, it's like, 'Just tell me how it's going to turn out,'" Copeland said, quoted by Billboard, Friday, June 19.
He admitted that he was still regularly communicating with Sting. The topic of their conversation did not lead to legal matters, but rather revolved around daily life, children, and sharing jokes on social media.
"I'm glad we can get along well, and we know how. This is not because of demonic impulses or human weaknesses such as jealousy, greed, pride, or anything else. It's because we had a time where our musical universes overlapped and we created some amazing works," said the 73-year-old drummer.
However, Copeland did not deny the sharp differences in vision between them in the past, especially in the matter of producing new works. This principled difference in music is what underlies their decision not to be in the same studio anymore.
"Sting and I make music for different reasons, and music has a different place in our lives. So, we can get along very well as long as we don't try to make music together," said Copeland.
The Police, active in the mid-1970s to 1984, successfully left gold ink in the history of world music through five studio albums. Their album released in 1983, "Synchronicity", even managed to get eight platinum and entered the Grammy Hall of Fame.
After having a global reunion tour in 2007-2008, Copeland now chooses to enjoy his commercial retirement by actively touring with the title "Have I Said Too Much? The Police, Hollywood and Other Adventures" in the North American region.
