Iran Freezes Strait of Hormuz Transit Fees for 60 Days

JAKARTA - The Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) of Iran announced that ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz were exempt from fees for 60 days in accordance with the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

As reported by ANTARA from IRNA, Friday, June 19, SNSC said that applicants for permission to pass through the waters would not be charged for 60 days and all costs would be borne by the Iranian government.

SNSC also stated that the Persian Gulf Waterway Authority (PGSA) had been directed to process and prioritize applications quickly to support the implementation of the Islamabad MoU.

According to SNSC, the special conditions and a number of safety risks on the shipping route require the ship to pass through the route and at the specified time.

The move is necessary to ensure the safety of shipping, prevent marine accidents, and allow the volume of ship traffic to increase gradually.

The operational arrangements and technical details of the voyage through the Strait of Hormuz will be announced by PGSA.

SNSC added that other steps, including mine clearance, would be carried out in accordance with the fifth paragraph of the Islamabad MoU.
