Kaspersky: 80 Percent of Asia Pacific Residents Aware of Psychological Impact of Digital Harassment
JAKARTA - The latest Kaspersky survey reveals that the Asia Pacific community still does not fully understand the widespread impact of technology-enabled abuse.
Based on research involving 7,600 respondents in 19 countries, as many as 80% of respondents in Asia Pacific admit that digital harassment can trigger psychological and social impacts, such as depression, trauma, prolonged stress, reputation damage, and social isolation.
Although understanding the psychological impact, some respondents still do not realize other consequences of digital harassment. Only 59% associate it with economic losses, while 53% say that digital harassment can lead to physical threats in the real world.
Kaspersky notes that the impact of digital harassment does not only occur in online spaces. As many as 55% of victims in Asia Pacific admit to being more cautious when they are online.
In addition, 25% reduced their digital presence, 18% limited communication with family or friends, and 12% ended personal relationships.
Despite these impacts, Kaspersky found that victims rarely seek formal support. 13% of victims in Asia Pacific who experience this breach take no action at all.
This lack of action is also seen among witnesses. Among those who witnessed abuse happening to someone they knew, 9% did nothing. This inaction is largely driven by uncertainty rather than indifference.
"By raising awareness, strengthening our cyber defenses, and fostering collective responsibility, we can work to ensure a safer digital environment for all of us," said Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky.
Kaspersky also shares tips to avoid becoming a victim of technology-enabled breaches:
Recognize the signs of harassment, exclusion, or threats in the digital space Document incidents if possible and ask for guidance before the situation gets worse Use strong and unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and review accounts periodically Avoid sharing sensitive devices, accounts, or information unless necessary Use security solutions to help identify suspicious activity Contact trusted individuals or professional organizations if you need help.
