Geely refreshes the EX5, more powerful with a 245 kW motor and LiDAR technology
JAKARTA - Geely introduced the latest update for the EX5 electric SUV in the Chinese market. The model, which is marketed in its home country under the name Geely Galaxy E5, comes with a number of significant design revisions and technical improvements, including the use of a rear-wheel drive (RWD) system and greater power.
Reported from Drive, Thursday, June 18, in appearance the latest Galaxy E5 still maintains the design character of the previous model. However, various important changes are embedded in the mechanical and technological sectors of the vehicle.
While the Geely EX5 currently sold in Australia relies on a 160 kW electric motor with front-wheel drive, the latest version for the Chinese market now uses a single electric motor that drives the rear wheels. The resulting power has also increased dramatically to 245 kW.
In addition to performance improvements, Geely also gave a new touch to the exterior. This electric SUV gets a revised front bumper design with larger side air ducts, a more prominent aerodynamic blade above the lower intake, and the use of active aero shutters to help aerodynamic efficiency.
Meanwhile, the back of the vehicle has not undergone many changes. The headlights, taillights, to the rear bumper still maintain the same design as the previous model.
The presence of a new bumper design makes the dimensions of the vehicle slightly increase. The overall length of the Galaxy E5 now reaches 4,636 mm or increases by 21 mm compared to the previous model. However, the wheelbase remains at 2,750 mm with a vehicle height of 1,670 mm.
Geely also made adjustments to the door handle design. This step was taken in line with new regulations in China that require the use of physical door handles with emergency safety standards starting in 2027. Therefore, the Galaxy E5 abandons the flush door handle design with a pop-out mechanism and switches to a conventional door handle that protrudes from the body.
A similar concept has previously been applied to the Geely Starray EM-i which is also marketed in a number of countries, including Australia. Other changes are seen in the charging port position.
Previously located on the right front fender, the battery charging location has now been moved to the left side rear panel of the vehicle. In the technology sector, Geely has also improved the driver assistance system for the Chinese domestic market.
The latest Galaxy E5 is seen equipped with a LiDAR sensor mounted on the windshield, as well as additional cameras on the side of the vehicle and the rear integrated with the spoiler. The presence of the new hardware is believed to support Geely's latest semi-autonomous system, the G-Pilot H5 which is part of the Geely Assisted Self Driving (G-ASD) platform.
This technology allows the Navigate On Autopilot feature to operate both on toll roads and in urban environments. However, the latest driver assistance feature is not expected to be immediately available for export markets, including Australia.
For information, the last update of the Geely EX5 in Australia was carried out in March 2026 through the use of a 68.4 kWh capacity battery that replaced the 60.2 kWh battery pack in the previous model. Until now, Geely has not revealed the battery capacity details that will be used in the latest Galaxy E5 generation for the Chinese market.
