South Korea Partners with OpenAI, Joins Global AI Security Club
South Korea has officially established an AI security partnership with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. This step makes South Korea the fourth country to enter into a similar cooperation after the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
According to a Yonhap report quoted on Thursday, June 18, the cooperation was signed through a memorandum of understanding between the South Korean AI Safety Institute or AISI and OpenAI.
Through the agreement, both parties will develop a global framework to evaluate AI security.
AISI and OpenAI will also exchange technical information. The goal is to develop an AI security assessment system that is appropriate for the Korean language and the South Korean social context.
This issue is important because AI is not just about chatbots that are getting smarter. Behind it there are risks that need to be tested, ranging from misuse of technology, language bias, to social impacts when AI is widely used.
Previously, OpenAI had signed similar agreements with AI security laboratories in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
Yonhap also reported that this cooperation is expected to strengthen South Korea's position in the global network to examine the risks of advanced AI and develop risk assessment standards.
AISI and OpenAI will hold working-level meetings to finalize the details of the cooperation.
