Smugglers of Orangutans and Hornbills in Aceh Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison

ACEH TIMUR - A panel of judges at the Idi District Court, East Aceh Regency, sentenced the defendant to smuggling protected animals to three years in prison.

The verdict was read by a panel of judges headed by Dikdik Haryadi at the Idi District Court, East Aceh Regency in East Aceh, Wednesday, June 17.

The panel of judges stated that the evidence in the form of animals that were still alive was confiscated for the state. Meanwhile, the evidence of animals that were no longer alive was confiscated for destruction.

In its ruling, the panel of judges stated that the defendant was found guilty of violating Article 40A Paragraph (1) letter d jo Article 21 Paragraph (2) letter a of Law Number 32 of 2024 concerning amendments to Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the conservation of natural biological resources and their ecosystems.

As well as Article 40A Paragraph (1) letter e jo Article 21 Paragraph (2) letter b of Law Number 32 of 2024 concerning amendments to Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the conservation of natural biological resources and their ecosystems.

Based on the facts and testimony of witnesses at the trial, the panel said, the defendant carried goods in the form of protected animals from North Aceh Regency to the Madat area, East Aceh Regency.

The defendant was arrested by a joint team of Langsa Customs and the Regional Forestry Gakkum Office of Sumatra on January 30, 2026, along with evidence of a number of protected animals.

The evidence of protected animals includes one individual Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), 11 large ara parrot (Psittaculirostris desmarestii), two brilliant towa (Lophorina magnafica).

Then, a Malay squirrel (loriculus galgulus), four bayan parrots (eclectus roratus), four kangkareng (rhabdotorrhinus exarhatus), three golden pheasants (gracula religiosa).

Next, six small birds of paradise (Paradisaea minor), three orange ara parrots (Cyclopsitta gulielmitertii), a board gibbon (Buceros bicornis), three Sumatran gibbons (Presbytis abeli), and others.

After hearing the reading of the verdict, the defendant Agussalim stated that he accepted the decision of the panel of judges. Meanwhile, the prosecutor said he was thinking. The panel of judges gave the public prosecutor seven days to think.
