2026 World Cup: Uzbekistan vs Colombia, Asian debutants' mission to stop the pace of Los Cafeteros

JAKARTA - Colombia started their campaign at the 2026 World Cup by facing debutants Uzbekistan in Group K match at the Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, Thursday, June 18 at 09.00 WIB. This match is the first test for Los Cafeteros' ambition to return to being a force to be reckoned with on the world stage after missing out on the 2022 edition.

On paper, Colombia comes as a strong favorite. The team coached by Nestor Lorenzo is ranked 13th in the FIFA world rankings and qualified for the final round after finishing in third place in the CONMEBOL zone qualifiers. On the other hand, Uzbekistan, which is ranked 50th in the world, has tasted the atmosphere of the World Cup for the first time since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

This match has an important meaning for both teams. Group K is also inhabited by Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, so the fight for two automatic tickets to the knockout round is expected to be tight. For Colombia, victory over Uzbekistan is an absolute target before facing Portugal, which is predicted to be the main competitor for the group champion. Meanwhile, for Uzbekistan, stealing points from the South American team can be a valuable capital in an effort to create a surprise.

Colombia returned to the World Cup with sweet memories in the 2014 edition when they reached the quarterfinals, the best achievement in the country's history. In the tournament in Brazil, James Rodriguez was phenomenal and came out as the top scorer. Four years later in Russia, Colombia again qualified for the knockout stage before being eliminated by England through a penalty shootout.

The failure to qualify for Qatar 2022 was a big blow. But under Lorenzo, Colombia managed to bounce back. They ended the South American qualifiers with 28 points and became one of the most productive teams with 28 goals. Only Argentina scored more goals throughout the qualifying phase.

Asian debutant

Uzbekistan has a different story. The Central Asian country has failed several times on the verge of elimination in the last two decades before finally securing a ticket to North America. They only lost once in 16 matches throughout the Asian qualifiers and managed to finish behind Iran in the final phase.

The success was a historic milestone for the country with a population of almost 40 million. Interestingly, Uzbekistan also became the first "double landlocked" country to qualify for the World Cup final round. After the ticket was secured, the federation appointed Fabio Cannavaro as head coach. The former Italian captain who lifted the 2006 World Cup trophy is expected to bring great experience to the White Wolves dressing room.

However, Uzbekistan's preparations ahead of the tournament did not go perfectly. They lost 0-2 to Canada and lost 1-2 to the Netherlands in a warm-up match. The results show that there is still a gap in quality between Uzbekistan and the world's elite teams.

On the other hand, Colombia came with a positive capital. After losing to Croatia and France in the March international break, they bounced back with a 3-1 win over Costa Rica and a 2-0 win over Jordan. The two victories showed that Lorenzo managed to restore the team's balance ahead of the tournament.

Historically, this match is the first meeting between Uzbekistan and Colombia. There is no head-to-head record that can be used as a reference. However, if you look at the quality of the squad and international experience, Colombia has a significant advantage.

In the Uzbekistan camp, attention will be focused on Eldor Shomurodov. The striker, who now plays for Istanbul Basaksehir, is the all-time top scorer for his country with 44 goals. Last season he was productive by scoring 22 goals in the Turkish league. In addition to Shomurodov, Abbosbek Fayzullaev is a figure worth watching. The 22-year-old is considered one of the best talents in Central Asia today.

The Uzbekistan defense line will be led by Abdukodir Khusanov. The Manchester City defender is a symbol of a new generation of Uzbek football and is expected to be able to dampen the aggressiveness of the opponent's attack.

Meanwhile, Colombia has a much better squad depth. Luis Diaz is the main threat after impressing throughout the qualifiers. He is the second highest scorer in the CONMEBOL zone and continues to grow into the leader of the national team's front line.

James Rodriguez is no longer at the peak of his performance, but his vision of playing and ability to create opportunities are still valuable assets. In the front line, Luis Suarez who shone with Sporting CP last season is expected to be able to translate the dominance of the Colombian game into goals.

Support from Richard Rios, Jefferson Lerma, Jhon Arias, Daniel Munoz, Davinson Sanchez and Jhon Lucumi makes Colombia have a balance between creativity, physical strength and experience.

In terms of tactics, Cannavaro is expected to maintain a more pragmatic 3-4-2-1 formation. Uzbekistan is likely to play with a low block and wait for counterattack opportunities through Fayzullaev's speed and Shomurodov's ingenuity.

Colombia, on the other hand, will dominate the ball and press from the start. Lorenzo is likely to use a 4-2-3-1 formation that allows Diaz and Arias to move freely from the sidelines. James Rodriguez's role as a link between the midfield and the front line is also expected to be key.

Another factor that can affect the match is the atmosphere of the Azteca Stadium as well as the altitude of Mexico City which reaches more than 2,200 meters above sea level. Physical adaptation becomes a challenge in itself, especially for teams who are not used to playing in such conditions.

Prediction

Colombia enter this match as favourites thanks to better individual quality, experience of playing in big tournaments, and a squad depth that is far above Uzbekistan. The presence of players such as Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez, Richard Rios and Luis Suarez gives them many options to break down the opponent's defence.

Uzbekistan has an advantage in the discipline of organizing the game and high spirits as a debutant. The presence of Khusanov and Shomurodov gives them a strong foundation at both ends of the field. However, the lack of experience in facing the world's elite teams is a big challenge.

Colombia's weakness lies in the tendency to lose concentration when facing a team that defends very deep. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan still faces a problem of creativity when forced to attack.

The difference in the quality of the midfield is expected to be the deciding factor. If Rodriguez and Rios are able to control the tempo of the match, Colombia should be able to create enough opportunities to secure victory.

Uzbekistan may be able to offer resistance early on, but as time goes on Colombia's individual quality is expected to speak.

Prediction : Uzbekistan 1-3 Colombia.
