US Senate Blocks Ninth Attempt to Restrict Trump's War Powers English: US Senate Blocks Ninth Attempt to Restrict Trump's War Powers

JAKARTA - The United States Senate on Tuesday blocked an effort from Capitol Hill to end the Iran war until it was passed by Congress by a narrow vote, the ninth attempt since Israel and the US launched an attack on Iran in February 2026.

The Senate voted 48-47 to block the resolution under the war powers law, which follows a framework deal announced this week by the White House and Tehran for a further ceasefire and talks to end the conflict, Al Arabiya reported from Reuters (17/6).

The vote was largely along party lines, as Republican members Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul of Kentucky voted with most of the Democrats who supported it.

On the other hand, Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted against along with most Republicans.

Meanwhile, the other five senators, Republican politicians Mitch McConnell from Kentucky and Josh Hawley from Missouri, as well as Democratic politicians Michael Bennet from Colorado and Cory Booker from New Jersey, along with Bernie Sanders from Vermont who came from an independent track, did not vote.

The vote comes as lawmakers wait for President Donald Trump's administration to provide details on the memorandum of understanding the Republican president announced Sunday to end the war.

Democrats and some of Trump's Republican allies have asked the administration for specific details about the plan.

It is known that the Republican Party holds a slim majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives also recently supported a resolution that would end the Iran war.

In a sign of lawmakers' frustration with the ongoing conflict, the Senate on May 19 voted to advance an eighth war powers resolution.

The draft faces another procedural vote before it is put to a vote in the Senate. Congressional aides said its sponsors were still trying to gather support, pending more information on the peace negotiations.
