BYD Indonesia Sales Plunged in May 2026, What is the Cause?
JAKARTA - BYD sales in Indonesia fell sharply in May compared to previous months. Based on data from the Indonesian Motor Vehicle Industry Association (Gaikindo), wholesales or distribution from the factory to the dealer only touched 800 units more. Of course, this figure is down sharply from the previous few months. In January 4,879 units, 4,653 units in February, 2,941 units in March and 4,625 units in April. As a result of the above, BYD was thrown out of the top 10 best-selling brands in May 2026. Its position fell to 14th place, behind fellow Chinese brands such as Chery to Wuling. Responding to this, Head of Marketing PR and Government Relations PT BYD Motor Indonesia Luther Panjaitan spoke up. According to him, the condition occurred because the company was adjusting the supply chain as local production began. "That was the impact of our production source transition, previously we were still based on imports, wholesales were part of the sale of the principal to the dealer," he said, when met in Jakarta, some time ago.
Furthermore, he said, currently BYD is repairing the vehicle supply system by shifting the source of production from imported vehicles to domestic production. This process has an impact on the distribution figures to dealers temporarily. "We are repairing the supply system with a transition from CBU goods to local production. So there is a little shock on the number side, but it will be normal again this month," he added. As is known, BYD is establishing a factory in Indonesia which is located in Subang, West Java. With an investment value of around IDR 16 trillion, this facility is targeted to have a production capacity of up to 150,000 units of vehicles per year to strengthen the production base in ASEAN.
