Basboi Celebrates a Decade of Work with the Kasablanka Album
JAKARTA - Baskara Rizqullah, better known by the stage name Basboi, marked a decade of musical career journey by launching his second full-length album titled "Kasablanka".
Through this project, the rapper from Medan presents a contemplative portrait as well as satire on the dynamics of Jakarta's metropolitan life, which often gets trapped in the search for false validation.
The album launch is a long-awaited follow-up after Basboi previously successfully introduced two singles, namely "GayA idup" and "Kl bkn aq".
For Basboi, "Kasablanka" is a personal manifesto that peels back his spiritual journey as a migrant. Born and spent his childhood in Medan, honing his creative intuition in Bandung, until finally experiencing character maturation in Jakarta.
"Jakarta is a junkie for lifestyle. And maybe there is no area in Jakarta that represents it as weird as Kasablanka. Because in Kasablanka, everything is mixed up," said Basboi in his statement, Monday, June 15.
Furthermore, he described how Kasablanka became a melting pot of social fusion that was very contrasting but lived side by side magically.
In the area, the line between luxury and the bitter struggle for survival becomes very blurred. Premium apartment complexes and magnificent shopping centers stand side by side with the reality of the working class, automotive communities, and those who struggle to keep their lives from collapsing in the harshness of the capital.
From his perspective, if the track "GayA idup" is analogous to a representation of the morning atmosphere of a metropolitan city full of ambition and the falsity of corporate masks, then the album "Kasablanka" as a whole photographs the Jakarta landscape in a much more complex format.
Basboi mutilates the sides of the urban public space that is dazzling but exhausting, looks handsome but empty, and feels noisy and lonely at the same time.
The sonic formulation in this album is designed to be very varied in order to reflect the noise of the never-sleeping capital. The listener is presented with dynamically moving arrangements, ranging from tight jerk drums, modern glossy trap covers, intimate melancholic numbers to accompany the night journey, to contemplative narratives that resemble the inner dialogue of a person when trapped in the silence of the early morning.
Behind the aesthetic packaging of pop culture, nightlife, and high-end fashion trends that he carries, this album contains a deep message. Basboi tries to explore the formula about how an individual is able to maintain his integrity and originality in the midst of an urban ecosystem that constantly demands everyone to become another figure for social recognition.
"According to me, this is probably the most honest album I've ever made. I'm not making a new persona or trying to explain myself to others. It's more like the result of all the cities that have shaped me, Medan, Bandung, until finally Jakarta, at Kasablanka," said the 28-year-old rapper.
Interestingly, Basboi does not position himself as a puritan who is anti-modernization or condemns the luxury of big cities. Instead, he honestly admits that he is an integral part of the metropolitan ecosystem, which openly loves the automotive world, clothing fashion, public attention, and the comfort of urban facilities.
However, this album gave birth to a critical awareness that dependence on public acceptance can reduce one's humanity. In the modern era where chaos is often considered a form of resistance, Basboi offers an unexpected antithesis. According to him, the most revolutionary act in the midst of the current Jakarta madness is not creating anarchy, but maintaining the discipline of life, maintaining mental sanity, and consistently stepping on the right path.
"I like that lifestyle, but at the same time I am also aware that this city can make everyone tired of chasing validation. Maybe now the most rebellious thing is to remain disciplined, remain sane, continue to walk," he concluded.
