Iran insists there is no sustainable agreement with the US without Lebanon's security guarantees

JAKARTA - Iran insists there is no sustainable agreement with the United States, without comprehensive guarantees of Lebanese security, calling for an end to attacks by Israel.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday there was no agreement with the US that would be sustainable "without comprehensive guarantees for Lebanon's security and territorial independence."

"The mention of the name 'Lebanon' three times in the recent memorandum of understanding shows the strategic position of this country in the reconciliation process," Esmail Baghaei said, launching Anadolu from Tasnim, Monday (15/6).

"Establishing a ceasefire and ending the war in Lebanon is an integral part of a comprehensive understanding to end the war," he added.

Furthermore, he emphasized, the release of frozen Iranian assets and compensation for war losses are "two important economic priorities" in the memorandum of understanding reached with Washington.

"The United States is obliged to cancel all primary and secondary sanctions, Security Council resolutions and nuclear bodies," he added.

"Details regarding the nuclear and economic issues will be resolved within 60 days after the signing of the agreement," Baqaei said, adding that once the memorandum was signed on Friday, all existing restrictions on the sale of Iranian oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals "will be immediately lifted."

Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday, the US bears responsibility for implementing the memorandum of understanding mediated by Pakistan with Tehran, calling for a cessation of Israel's attacks on Lebanon.

This happened during separate phone conversations Abbas Araghchi with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, according to Iran's state news agency, IRNA.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Araghchi and his colleagues also stressed the need to maintain diplomatic efforts to achieve stability and security in the region, the media added.

Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country is leading the mediation between Washington and Tehran, announced on Monday morning that the US and Iran had reached a peace agreement and that the signing would be held in Switzerland on Friday this week.
