US - Iran Peace Agreement, Indonesia asks all parties to refrain
JAKARTA - Indonesia welcomes the initial agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war. Jakarta asks all parties to remain restrained so that the momentum of reducing tensions continues.
Launching Anadolu Agency quoted on Monday, June 15, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Indonesia appreciated all parties and mediators who opened the space for dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
"We appreciate the efforts of all parties and mediators who have contributed constructively to facilitating dialogue and encouraging the peaceful resolution of differences," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said via X, Monday.
Indonesia also calls on all parties to continue to refrain, maintain commitments, and engage in constructive dialogue. This step is considered important to maintain the momentum of de-escalation. De-escalation means efforts to reduce tensions so that conflicts do not spread.
Indonesia's statement came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the United States and Iran had reached a peace deal. The signing ceremony is said to be held in Switzerland on Friday.
Washington and Tehran later confirmed the announcement.
US President Donald Trump said the deal had been finalized. He also announced plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US naval blockade.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy trade routes.
Anadolu reported that Pakistan has been a mediator between the US and Iran since the ceasefire was reached on April 8. The ceasefire came weeks after the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Indonesia is looking forward to the implementation of the agreement. Jakarta also emphasized its readiness to support peace, security, and stability in the Middle East region.
"Indonesia looks forward to the implementation of this agreement and reaffirms its readiness to support efforts aimed at promoting peace, security, and stability in the region, in accordance with international law as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter," the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said.
For Indonesia, stability in the Middle East is important because the region is related to global energy and trade routes. Therefore, Jakarta's stance emphasizes self-restraint, dialogue, and implementation of agreements in accordance with international law.
