Chaka Khan Agrees to Sell His Music Catalog to HarbourView Equity Partners
JAKARTA - Legendary singer and 11-time Grammy winner Chaka Khan has officially entered into a strategic partnership with investment company HarbourView Equity Partners.
Through this collaboration, HarbourView officially acquired a portion of the ownership rights to the diva's music catalog that has graced the world music industry for more than five decades.
To date, HarbourView has not provided details regarding the value of the transaction or the percentage of catalog rights transferred. However, the investment institution based in Newark, New Jersey, stated that the collaboration would focus on catalog development, global licensing, and the creation of various new creative project lines in the future.
Chaka Khan is known as one of the most influential singers in the funk and R&B music genres, both when still part of Rufus and when embarking on a career as a soloist. His world-renowned gold works include "I'm Every Woman", "Tell Me Something Good", "Ain't Nobody", and the iconic ballad "Through the Fire".
This business move was agreed upon shortly after the 73-year-old singer released her new song titled "Chakzilla" last April. The release of the new song also marked a new creative era after the diva received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award earlier in the year.
Responding to this commercial partnership, Chaka Khan expressed his views on the value of the artwork he released to the investment market.
"Music is the most powerful and generous thing I know, you share it and somehow the music always comes back with a bigger impact. Seeing these songs still find new ears and new hearts fills me with joy," Chaka Khan said, quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, Monday, June 15.
He also added the reason for choosing the investment company as the manager of his intellectual assets.
"This incredible group at HarbourView understands what my music means, not just as a business, but as an embodiment of love. That's really important to me," he continued.
On the other hand, the founder and CEO of HarbourView Equity Partners, Sherrese Clarke, expressed his respect for being able to work directly with the living legend who not only inspires through music, but also as a cross-generational fashion icon.
"Chaka Khan is a phenomenal talent - an artist whose voice, soul, and presence have moved unhindered across generations without ever losing its power or essence," said Clarke.
With the addition of Chaka Khan, HarbourView further solidifies its position as one of the most aggressive players in the global entertainment industry's intellectual property acquisition business.
The global company, which now manages regulatory assets worth around 3.88 billion US dollars, has previously successfully agreed on similar transactions with other well-known musicians such as Kelly Clarkson, T-Pain, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, to the late Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac.
