To Hold Presidential Candidate Convention, Nasdem: Public Can Be Involved From The Beginning

JAKARTA - The National Democratic Party (NasDem) hopes that the presidential candidate convention scheduled for 2022 will bring out many quality figures. Thus, more than two pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates were created in the 2024 presidential election.

According to the Chairman of the NasDem Party's Java II (West Java) Election Winning Territories, Saan Mustopa, an open recruitment process through conventions will produce leaders who are accountable to the public.

"The public can also be involved from the start, not only when there is already a presidential candidate," said Saan in his statement, Thursday, June 10.

Saan considered that, through this convention, Indonesia could produce a president who had a strong national commitment, very adequate capabilities, and continued his previous leadership.

"The convention also opens up opportunities for more than two pairs of presidential candidates (candidates)," said the secretary of the NasDem faction in the DPR.

Saan also believes that the implementation will be better if the number of presidential candidates contesting the 2024 presidential election is followed by three pairs of candidates. He assessed, with a presidential threshold of 20 percent, the 2024 presidential election is very possible to present three pairs of vice presidential candidates.

"The assumption is that there can be five pairs of candidates, so if three pairs of presidential candidates it is very possible," he said.

Looking at the experience of holding two presidential elections in 2014 and 2019, continued the deputy chairman of Commission II of the DPR, the election was only followed by two pairs of presidential candidates which then caused a negative effect by polarization in society.

"If there are more than two pairs of presidential candidates, it allows people to have many alternative choices," he said.

Meanwhile, regarding coalitions with other parties, Saan stated, NasDem has no problem with forming a coalition with any political party.

"What is important for NasDem is to have the same vision and the same national commitment," he said.
