Indonesian Young Talent Breaks into Australian Open 2026 Semifinals, Mental Champion Gets Older
JAKARTA - Indonesian badminton talents have again been given the opportunity to show their capacity on the international stage. Their performance is a reflection of the sustainable coaching process carried out by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) with the full support of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BNI.
The formation of a champion mentality forged through the experience of competing continuously in various international events continues to show positive results. This is reflected in the success of two young Indonesian male singles, Alwi Farhan Alhasny and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, advancing to the semifinals of the 2026 Australian Badminton Open which took place at Quaycentre, Olympic Boulevard, Sydney, Australia.
BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said that Alwi and Ubed's achievements showed that Indonesian young athletes have the ability to compete at the highest level while showing the results of a consistent and tiered coaching process.
"In addition to improving technical ability, experience competing in various international tournaments also plays an important role in shaping the mental champion and competitiveness of young Indonesian athletes," said Okki in a written statement.
Alwi secured a place in the semi-finals after defeating Taiwan's representative, Lee Chia Hao, in the quarter-final match. Alwi won the two games directly with a score of 21-18, 21-15. The victory was also a better achievement than his performance at the Australian Open last year, when his steps stopped in the last eight.
The results continued Alwi's series of experience in a number of major tournaments, after previously appearing in the Singapore Open and Indonesia Open.
Meanwhile, Ubed became the second Indonesian representative to secure a semi-final ticket after eliminating Justin Hoh from Malaysia in the quarter-finals. Appearing convincingly, Ubed won two straight games with a score of 21-7, 21-13 in just 38 minutes.
The struggle of the two of them is still continuing. In the semifinal round, Alwi will face Hong Kong's Men's Singles while Ubed is scheduled to face the Chinese representative, Dong Tian Yao. If both of them are able to pass the obstacles of their respective opponents, Indonesia has the opportunity to create an all-Indonesian final match in the men's singles sector of the 2026 Australian Open.
"We hope that the experience of competing in top-level tournaments like this can further strengthen the confidence and maturity of Indonesian young athletes. The regeneration process requires flight hours and the opportunity to compete consistently at the international level," said Okki.
Support for young athletes is part of BNI's long-term commitment to encouraging the birth of a new generation of Indonesian badminton players who are able to compete at the global level.
Through synergy with PBSI, BNI hopes that more young players will have the opportunity to develop and enrich international experience. BNI believes that this is a long-term investment in the development of the Indonesian young generation, which can gradually strengthen Indonesia's position as one of the main forces in world badminton.
