Honda Recalls 1 Million CR-V and Accord in the US, Due to Closing the Tire Sealant Bottle
JAKARTA - Honda has recalled more than 1 million units of CR-V and Accord for an unusual reason: the cap of the tire sealant bottle can come off due to excessive pressure.
Citing a report from Road and Track, Friday, June 12, this recall refers to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA document, the United States traffic safety agency.
The total number of vehicles affected reached 1,049,883 units. The models on the recall list are the Honda CR-V Hybrid 2023-2026, Honda CR-V Fuel Cell EV 2025-2026, and Honda Accord Hybrid 2023-2026.
The problem is with the tire sealant bottle in the tire repair device. If the bottle is not properly connected to the tire valve, the pressure inside the bottle can increase. As a result, the bottle cap can bounce and the sealant spray around.
NHTSA said the risk of injury could increase if the bottle cap comes off. Honda has recorded eight injury reports related to this problem.
According to NHTSA documents, the design of the tire repair device does not sufficiently take into account the pressure buildup when the nozzle is not properly connected. In addition, some pressure relief valves from suppliers are not properly adjusted so that the pressure does not come out as designed.
This problem is estimated to only occur in about 1 percent of the total vehicles being recalled. However, Honda has recorded 53 warranty claims related to the device.
Honda first became aware of the problem in April 2023. However, the company only obtained components for analysis in August 2024. The investigation continued until January 2025.
In April 2025, Honda concluded that the problem was caused by the consumer's incorrect use of the tire repair device. A few months later, injury reports came in. It was only in March 2026 that Honda identified a production defect in the device.
Honda said the repair was carried out by replacing the nozzle of the tire repair device or the liquid bottle with a component that uses a two-way valve.
Honda also stated that the production of the tire repair device had been changed in May 2026 so that similar problems would not occur in the next model.
