US Cuts Like Third of Fighter Jets for NATO Operations in Europe

JAKARTA - The United States will reduce the number of fighter jets assigned to NATO operations in Europe by about a third.

Washington had presented the plan to its allies in Europe in early June, the newspaper reported, which claimed to have reviewed the relevant communication excerpts.

The plan, reported by Sputnik, Friday, June 12, includes reducing the number of F-16 and F-15E fighter jets stationed in Europe to about 100 units from the previous 150 units.

The number of maritime patrol aircraft will also be cut to 15 units from 26 units, while eight aerial refueling tanker aircraft will be withdrawn from operations in Europe.

In addition, the US also plans to move one missile-armed submarine, one aircraft carrier, several warships, and dozens of aircraft that currently support the mission of the aircraft carrier battle group.

One of two bomber task forces, previously assigned to European defense, is also reportedly being moved to another region.
