Australian Open 2026: Alwi and Ubed advance to the last eight
JAKARTA - Indonesian junior men's singles badminton players, Alwi Farhan and Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, compactly secured victory in the second round of the 2026 Australian Open, continuing their journey to the quarterfinals.
Ubaidillah was the first to secure a ticket after defeating eighth seed Lee Cheuk Yiu (Hong Kong) in a straight two-game match with a final score of 21-19 and 21-15 at the Quay Centre on Thursday, June 11, 2026, morning WIB.
"I learned from the failure at the big Malaysia Masters, so today I tried to increase the desire to win again," said the badminton player, who is familiarly called Ubed, in a statement received by the media.
The badminton player from Sampang, Madura, previously crashed out in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Masters in mid-May 2026. He was stopped in that phase because he had to admit the advantage of the French badminton player, Christo Popov.
Thus, he has a great chance to step into his first semifinal at the Super 500-level tournament in Australia this week. To achieve that, Ubed must defeat Justin Ho (Malaysia) in the eight finals tomorrow, June 12, 2026.
"Hopefully tomorrow we can get into the semifinals at the Super 500. I try to stay focused, positive thinking, recovery, then evaluate today's game, discuss again with the coach," said the 18-year-old athlete.
Alwi followed Ubed's move to the quarter-finals with a more difficult struggle. The badminton player who has the status of the third seed had to go through a three-game match 20-22, 21-16, and 21-9 against Minoru Koga from Japan.
This is the sixth quarterfinal that Alwi has stepped on so far this year's calendar. In the previous five occasions, Alwi was recorded as one time being held in the eight big stage and managed to pass the other four with the final result of two semi-finalists, one title, and one time being a runner-up.
"The journey is still very long, so I focus on the quarterfinals. Tomorrow is ready to fight, ready to fight, because there is no easy match. Hopefully God will help me because this has been a third week in a row, it's definitely not easy," said Alwi.
