Mitsubishi is preparing the Eclipse Sportback EV with the Nissan Leaf base
JAKARTA - Mitsubishi is reviving the Eclipse name for its latest model. After presenting the Eclipse Cross which adopts many technologies from the Renault Scenic E-Tech, the Japanese manufacturer is now introducing the Eclipse Sportback EV for the North American market.
As reported by ArenaEV, Wednesday, June 10, this latest electric model is scheduled to go on sale in late summer to early fall this year. Mitsubishi has also released the first photo showing the shape of the vehicle.
Broadly speaking, the Eclipse Sportback EV is a version developed from the latest generation of the Nissan Leaf with a number of Mitsubishi-typical design adjustments. Mitsubishi claims that the Eclipse Sportback EV will look different from the Leaf thanks to a number of cosmetic touches that make it "unique as a Mitsubishi".
The changes include the front and rear fascia design which is said to adopt the character from Mitsubishi Motors' global vehicle line-up, complete with front and rear lamp designs, distinctive lighting signs, and the use of special alloy wheels.
Unlike the highest-end Nissan Leaf Platinum+, the Eclipse Sportback EV is confirmed not to be equipped with "3D holographic LED" technology rear lights. Mitsubishi is also still keeping the interior of this vehicle a secret.
A number of observers predict that the cabin will have similarities with the latest Nissan Leaf, with the main difference being the use of Mitsubishi's identity and logo on the steering wheel. For reference, the new generation Leaf is available with two digital screen options measuring 12.3 inches and 14.3 inches, depending on the variant.
It is not yet certain whether the Eclipse Sportback EV will also get an electrochromic panoramic roof feature or a Bose Personal audio system equipped with integrated speakers on the headrests as available on the Leaf.
In terms of technology, this vehicle is built using the CMF-EV platform which is also the basis for the Nissan Leaf and Nissan Ariya. Although the official specifications are still confidential, the Eclipse Sportback EV is expected to carry a battery pack with a capacity of 52 kWh and 75 kWh if it refers to the latest Leaf specifications.
The drive system is likely to rely on a single electric motor with a choice of 174 hp (130 kW) or 214 hp (160 kW) power, depending on the variant offered. For cruising range, the Nissan Leaf can travel up to 488 kilometers based on the US EPA standard, so similar figures could potentially be presented on the Eclipse Sportback EV.
Mitsubishi stated that the details of the price and complete specifications of the Eclipse Sportback EV will be announced closer to the launch time. In addition to the model, the company also confirmed that it is preparing a tough-style SUV based on the Outlander which is focused on off-road use and is scheduled to launch in early 2027.
