Nagoya Asian Games Silver Coins Start to be Produced in Japan

Japan Mint, the Japanese mint, has started producing commemorative silver coins for the Asian Games and Asian Para Games, which will be held in Nagoya this year.

As reported by Kyodo News, Tuesday, June 9, the coin is made of pure silver. Its size is 40 millimeters in diameter with a weight of 31.1 grams.

There are two types of coins produced. One side features the engraving of athletes competing at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium, Aichi Prefecture. The other side features the Asian Games mascot, Honohon, and the Asian Para Games mascot, Uzumin.

Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura said the coin was a way to keep memories of the Asian Games.

"The color is beautiful. This will be part of the legacy to carry the memories of this sports festival into the future," Omura said at the ceremony on Monday. He also served as Chairman of the Asian Games Organizing Committee.

Japan Mint is selling the coin for 34,800 yen or around US$220 per piece. Purchases are limited to one coin per person.

Reservations are open via mail and online until June 23.

The Nagoya Asian Games will begin on September 19. The Asian Para Games will follow on October 18.
