Kremlin Reveals No Plans for Putin-Trump Phone Call
JAKARTA - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that there are currently no plans for a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, adding that US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are continuing to maintain contact with Russia and Ukraine.
"The mediation process regarding Ukraine is currently suspended. Nevertheless, US negotiators are still in contact - discussions continue with us through existing channels and with Ukraine. There is no definite date for their visit, but we will be happy to welcome them in Russia at any time," Peskov explained, launching Al Arabiya from Reuters (9/6).
Witkoff and Kushner were previously involved in mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine, which stalled in February after the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday he had had "positive" conversations with Witkoff and Kushner and praised what he called their readiness to work on a settlement of the Ukraine war in the coming weeks.
Peskov said the Kremlin had not been informed of the call by the US side.
Asked about the potential for mediation efforts by Europe, Peskov said Russia currently viewed such involvement as "unacceptable."
"First of all, starting mediation efforts by submitting certain conditions to Russia is most likely illogical and wrong. But the main thing is, as far as we see, the Europeans are much more likely to focus on the continuation of the war than on peace talks," he said.
