Doctors Emphasize the Myth of Sitting Wind, This is the Scientific Explanation and How to Overcome It

JAKARTA - The term 'sitting wind' is still widely used by the community and is often considered a common cold. In fact, the term is a myth.

Heart and vascular specialist, dr. Febtusia Puspitasari, Sp.JP, FIHA, FAsCC, the condition is not a common cold, but a disorder of the heart.

In the medical world, this condition is called angina pectoris, which is chest pain that occurs because the heart muscle does not get enough blood and oxygen supply.

"This (sitting wind) is a myth," said Dr. Febtusia, during a Daewoong media meeting, in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

"Sitting wind, which is often considered mild and tried to be overcome by scratching, is actually a typical symptom of angina pectoris, which is a condition when the heart muscle does not get enough blood and oxygen supply," he explained.

The main symptom of angina pectoris is pain like being hit by a heavy load in the middle of the chest, which can spread to the jaw, arm, and back. Symptoms are also often accompanied by sweating, nausea, dizziness, and feeling weak.

"If it is left until the blood vessels are completely blocked, this condition can directly lead to acute myocardial infarction or sudden death," he said.

The cause of angina pectoris is narrowing of the blood vessels, which occurs due to the accumulation of plaques such as cholesterol and fat on the coronary artery wall.

Risk factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, smoking habits, high blood pressure (hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol also increase the occurrence of angina pectoris.

Therefore, it is very important to apply a healthy lifestyle, keep cholesterol levels under control to prevent angina pectoris. Strict management of LDL-C levels, known as bad cholesterol, to below 55 mg/dL is important to help control one of the main causes of angina.

In patients with high cholesterol, statin therapy is recommended to lower LDL cholesterol levels, to prevent the risk of heart disease. There is also Daewoong combination therapy as one of the treatment options, which is designed to increase the ease of taking medication by combining two active substances in one tablet.

"For patients who have difficulty reaching the target with conventional single statin therapy or have concerns about the side effects of high-dose statins, a dual-pathway or dual-pathway approach based on a combination of statins or ezetimibe can be an effective option," said Head of Brand & Marketing Daewoong Pharmaceutical Indonesia, dr. Wicak Prasetiadi.

This approach works by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis in the liver while reducing cholesterol absorption in the intestine. This will support more optimal cholesterol management and make it easier for patients to undergo long-term treatment.
