DKI DPRD about Shin Tae-yong to Persija: Don't be a cat, be a tiger

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta DPRD Chairman Suhud Alynudin hopes that Persija Jakarta will be able to end the dominance of rivals in the national competition after appointing Shin Tae-yong as the new coach for the 2026/2027 Super League season.

"Yes, it has to be a champion, because don't let Persib continue to be the champion. Don't be a cat, be a tiger. Hopefully, the upcoming league, the upcoming competition, Persija will really be a tiger," Suhud told reporters, Tuesday, June 9.

Suhud assessed that Persija's decision to recruit Shin Tae-yong was the right move. In addition to having a track record as an experienced coach, the former Indonesian national team coach also has a large support base in the country.

"I think it's a smart move, yes. Because Shin Tae-yong is a coach who has a large fan base in Indonesia, not just Jakarta. Well, so this will add enthusiasm, add attention to the residents of Persija. Well, I think this is a smart move," he said.

According to him, the presence of Shin Tae-yong not only has an impact on the team's performance on the field, but also adds value to Persija's popularity in the public eye.

Suhud also hopes that the Persija management will provide full support to the South Korean coach so that he can focus on building a competitive team.

"Yes, hopefully Persija can pay Shin Tae-yong well. So that he can train seriously, yes so that football in Jakarta through Persija can continue to be improved like that," he said.

Persija Jakarta officially appointed Shin Tae-yong as the new coach to replace Mauricio Souza to sail the 2026/2027 Super League season.

The coach who once managed the Indonesian National Team was introduced on Monday, June 8, 2026. The announcement of Shin Tae-yong's arrival was broadcast via Persija's official Instagram.

Shin Tae-yong is not a new person in Indonesian football. He managed the Indonesian National Team from the age group level to the senior level in January 2020.

Shin Tae-yong's association with the Garuda Squad ended in January 2025. Not long after, he returned to his country and was elected Vice President of the South Korean Football Federation (KFA).

Still in the same month, Shin Tae-yong was also given the position as a part-time General Manager of Seongnam FC, a club that he once won the Asian Champions League.
