AVC Cup 2026 results: Indonesia loses a dramatic defeat to Vietnam
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Women's Volleyball National Team suffered a dramatic defeat when facing Vietnam in the continuation of the 2026 AVC Cup Women's Group Stage.
Marcos Sugiyama's squad performed competitively and closed the match with a narrow defeat of 2-3 (25-18, 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, and 13-15) in Candon City, Philippines on Monday, June 8, 2026. This is the second defeat suffered by Indonesia.
"Vietnam was calmer at crucial moments. That was proof of their champion mentality who were able to come out of the pressure in a very tight match," said Indonesian Team Manager, Luciana Taroreh, after the match.
Indonesia immediately showed an aggressive game since the match started. Putri Nur Agustin and her colleagues successfully controlled the match in the first set and closed it with a victory.
Vietnam then began to find the rhythm of the game in the second set. Indonesia had to fight, but eventually lost 22-25. A similar situation occurred again in the third set when Vietnam was able to maintain the consistency of the game to win 25-18.
Being 1-2 did not make the spirit of the Indonesian players recede. The Red-White team rose in the fourth set with a more effective game and managed to win 25-19 to force the match to continue to the deciding set.
The fifth set was very tight. Both teams took turns leading the scoring and continued to stick to the final points. However, Vietnam appeared calmer at the crucial moment and finally secured the victory 15-13.
The appearance against Vietnam is a positive signal for Indonesia after previously swallowing a defeat in the second match against Kazakhstan which ended with a landslide score of three sets straight 19-25, 19-25, and 19-25.
Indonesia actually started this tournament with a landslide victory 3-1 when they met Iran. One victory and one tight match when they met Vietnam made Indonesia collect four points so far to sit in third place in the standings.
Putri Nur and her friends still have a rest of the match against Hong Kong and Lebanon. Indonesia needs to win both matches to be able to chase the two best places in the standings to get a semi-final ticket.
