Iran Fires Missile at Israel in Response to Attack on Lebanon

Iran launched missiles into northern Israel on Sunday night, the first attack since a fragile ceasefire in early April amid an escalation after an Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Iran's state broadcaster, IRIB, confirmed the attack, saying the attack would continue "if Israel responds to Iran's attack or does not stop its attack on Lebanon," Anadolu (8/6) reported.

Meanwhile, Hebrew-language media reported that Tehran fired three waves of missiles towards Israel, while Israel's public broadcaster KAN said the attack involved a total of 10 ballistic missiles, including a salvo of four projectiles.

Initial reports showed damage in the Israeli city of Tiberias, while operations at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv were suspended.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army said the air defense system intercepted the missiles before claiming all the projectiles had been shot down.

Explosions were heard over Haifa and Nazareth as Israel's air defense system responded to the attack, according to an Anadolu correspondent.

KAN reported the cancellation of classes across Israel and quoted Israeli officials as saying Tel Aviv would respond to the Iranian attack.

Channel 12 also reported that an Israeli woman was moderately injured while heading to a protected area during the missile attack, while an unnamed Israeli official told the television station that "there is no possibility" that Israel would refrain from retaliating.

The escalation comes hours after an Israeli air strike on the southern outskirts of Beirut killed at least two people and wounded 11.

The attack marked the third Israeli attack on the southern outskirts of Beirut since the ceasefire came into effect on April 17, after previous attacks on May 6 and May 28.
