Hongqi Enters Electric Off-Road SUV Arena, G919 Has Four Motors

JAKARTA - Hongqi officially named its first off-road SUV G919. This car is a new step for the Chinese premium brand to enter the increasingly crowded electrified off-road SUV segment.

Citing a report from CarNewsChina, Sunday, June 7, FAW Hongqi announced the name of G919 on June 6. Previously, this car was known by the internal code P567 and had appeared several times through concepts, spy photos, and the 2026 Beijing Auto Show.

Hongqi said the letter "G" represents the tradition of Chinese national cars. The two numbers "9" indicate the flagship position and long-term service support. The number "1" symbolizes high-end performance.

The G919 uses EREV technology or extended-range electric vehicles. Simply put, the wheels are driven by an electric motor, while the gasoline engine is tasked with helping recharge and extend the range.

The SUV uses four electric motors, each placed on each wheel. With this system, power can be divided into each wheel separately via software.

According to a previous report quoted by CarNewsChina, the G919 combines a 2.0-liter turbo engine as a range extender with four electric motors. Its combined power reaches 620 kW and 1,320 Nm of torque.

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is claimed to be 4.5 seconds. Its pure electric range reaches 280 km based on the CLTC standard. The total range is said to reach 1,350 km. This model is expected to launch in the second half of 2026.

In terms of size, the G919 is quite large. It has a length of 5,135 mm, a width of 2,050 mm, a height of 1,950 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

Despite using electrification technology, Hongqi still maintains old off-road devices. The G919 uses a body-on-frame construction, i.e. the body and chassis are made separately. Models like this are commonly used in off-road vehicles because they are stronger in heavy terrain.

The SUV is also equipped with air suspension and differential lock or differential lock on both axles. This feature helps the wheels keep getting power when crossing slippery, rocky terrain, or when some wheels lose grip.

Hongqi also confirmed the presence of three differential locks. The prototype and the G919 exhibition unit were seen wearing all-terrain tires, recovery tow hooks, cargo carrier devices on the roof, rear serep tires, and lidar sensors on the roof.

The presence of the G919 comes at a time when the electric off-road SUV market in China is getting crowded. Zeekr 9X and Zeekr 8X show increased interest in electrified premium SUVs. Brands such as Tank, Fang Cheng Bao, and Yangwang have also entered with increasingly specialized off-road products.

According to data from China EV DataTracker quoted by CarNewsChina, Hongqi's domestic sales reached 19,580 units in April 2026. The figure is equivalent to 1.4 percent of China's passenger car market share.

The arrival of the G919 marks a new step for Hongqi into the electrified off-road SUV segment, which is now increasingly crowded in the Chinese market.
