Jojo One Step Closer! Jonatan Christie Enters the Indonesia Open Final
JAKARTA - Indonesia added another representative to the final match of the 2026 Polytron Indonesia Open after Jonatan Christie's men's singles successfully secured a ticket to the final.
The mainstay of the Red and White singles defeated Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul from Thailand through a three-game battle with a score of 16-21, 21-10, and 21-12.
In addition to the men's singles sector, Indonesia has also secured a place in the men's doubles final. The ticket will be contested in a duel between fellow host representatives, Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin and Sabar Karyaman Gutama/M Reza Pahlevi Isfahani.
The 2026 Indonesia Open semifinal match, Jonatan vs Teeraratsakul, took place as predicted with high tension. In the first game, Jonatan had difficulty developing the game and continued to be under the pressure of his opponent who appeared aggressive.
Entering the second game, the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist made a change in strategy. He played more patiently, set the tempo, and waited for the right opportunity to launch an attack. The change managed to reverse the situation and force the match to continue to the deciding game.
In the third game, Jonatan appeared more confident. On the other hand, Teeraratsakul's game declined and often made his own mistakes. When he was 17-11 ahead, Jonatan was more difficult to chase until he finally secured the victory after the opponent's return to the field.
"Thank God, praise God, we can advance to the final round after a pretty tense game because the ball conditions are quite different from before. Today the shuttlecock is very fast and this is quite beneficial for the opponent because he is an attacking player, his smash is very fast," said Jonatan.
"At first I didn't anticipate this, so the opponent got a lot of points and the attack was really good. In the second half I tried to play more aggressively, and praise God I could get out of the pressure," he added.
The success of reaching the final has a special meaning for Jonatan. For the first time in his career, he managed to reach the Indonesia Open final, a tournament that has always been one of his main targets.
"This is my first final at the Indonesia Open and being able to go this far means a lot to me. I've been waiting for this moment for a long time. I've been trying to find the right formula as well, and yes, maybe God gave it to me this year," said Jonatan.
In the final match, Jonatan will face the Canadian representative, Victor Lai. Previously, Victor secured a place in the final match after defeating Chou Tien Chen from Chinese Taipei in a tight three-game match with a score of 21-19, 19-21, and 21-19.
According to Jonatan, facing a young player like Victor will be a challenge in itself because he has high speed and fighting spirit.
"Victor is the third young player I have faced in this tournament. First Alwi (Farhan), then Panitchaphon (Teeraratsakul) and Victor (Lai). Young players have speed, endurance, fighting spirit, and high spirits. It was seen that he was facing Chou Tien Chen also very tight in his game. That's what needs to be anticipated," explained Jonatan.
The 2026 Polytron Indonesia Open final will also be the first meeting between Jonatan and Victor. With a record of meetings that are still empty, the duel for the title is predicted to be exciting and full of surprises.
